Aus Der Tiefe

Interview:
- ASP - Requiembryo
- ASP: Who Else?

The fourth chapter in the "Schwarze Schmetterling"-series is entitled "Aus Der Tiefe" and is made available in two different formats: a regular, single CD and a limited edition who contains the regular 18 tracks as well as a bonus disc with 13 songs. The limited box is presented in a DVD-sized digipak and was given a lot of attention. The visual aspect is always important for ASP, and it's clear that this box is high-quality as we know it. Also included in the limited edition is a large booklet with all lyrics (of both discs) as well as tasty photographs.

The ASP-standard for quality is also reflected on the music on "Aus Der Tiefe": it's clear that a lot of work has been put in this album, and that the work of producers Pohl and Manke (Terminal Choice) has had a large influence. The album sounds very open, yet dark. More humane and yet more distant. The dark, electronic sounds are easily overpassed by the presence of guitars - as we've heard ASP do before - and makes it a worthy musical foundation for the typical, sometimes nearly preaching vocals. When these factors are added up, it's clear the sound of ASP has been kept nearly intact and that besides some experimenting, there are few surprised to be found. A wise decision, for ASP's song writing skills have been proven years ago and there really is no need in experimenting with different influences.

The 18 songs on "Aus Der Tiefe" are divided in several categories: there are five short intermezzo's, ranging from 21 seconds ("Schattenschreie") to 2m17 ("Wilkommen Zurück") as well as the 'Spiegelauge'-series, built up out of the last five songs on the album. This concept makes the regular songs tasty and easy to overcome and all adds up to a quick passing 70 minutes. The hit potential of some songs is high: "Schwarzes Blut", "Me" and "Hunger" are certain candidates for a single or EP, whilst longer, more inaccessible songs are also included in the shape of album openere "Beschwörung" and "Ballade von der Erweckung".

The bonus-CD for last has 13 songs and offers alternative versions and the logical radio edits of some album songs. More interesting though are the instrumental version of "Beschwörung", a spoken word-bonus ("Buch des Vergessenes"), two live versions of "Und Wir Tanzten" and "Ich Will Brennen" and the two remixes done by Umbra et Imago and Blutengel ("Kokon" and "Me"). All and all a great new album, definitely recommendable for the older fans ASP obviously already had.
