Interview:
- Portion Control: Electronic Industrial Pioneers

<< Back

The British industrial Group Portion Control has been of great influence on many electronic artists. Artists such as Orbital, The Prodigy, Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy and Depeche Mode have all stated that they have been influenced by the music of Portion Control. The success of this band, which has been active since the early 80’s, culminated in a slot as support for the European Depeche Mode tour in 1984. In 1987 the first incarnation of the band dissolved whereafter the band returned in between 1990 and 1993 as Solar Enemy. Since 2002 however a definite comeback was made and new albums appeared with Wellcome, Filthy White Guy and Slug. Now it’s time for the new compilation album Crop. On Crop, which is some kind of compilation of material from 2004-2008, Portion Control shows its trademark of refined electronic music combined with influences taken from industrial and modern techno. This leads to innovative and exciting industrial music. The punk like vocals remind strongly of the heydays from the US EBM-industrial yet with an English accent. The second cd contains an EP with reworked existing tracks and new material. Musically some highly infectious tracks are placed on Crop, like ‘Global’, ‘Blood Rushed to Head, ‘Blind Eyes’ and ‘Chew You to Bits Rebuild’. Next to that on Crop also some lengthy soundtrack alike epic tracks can be found such as met ‘Onion Jack II Segue’ and ‘Onion Jack IV Segue’ in which the experiment of Portion Control really shows why so much talent is attributed to these men. Crop is nothing but a top release that shows what it’s all about in industrial music: creating exciting and surprising sounds and melodies. This recording will absolutely end up high in my yearlist of 2009
