Minimal Baby II

<< Back

A while ago my fellow Gothtronic colleague reviewed the first ‘Minimal Baby’ compilation from SkullLine and was very excited about it. Now I have the pleasure to listen to the follow-up ‘Minimal Baby II’. I’m very curious what all the  is about and if I get the same feeling for it.

With the first tones of the opening song by Shift69, ‘The Finder (Demo 2006)’, you already now you are in minimal heaven. A great song with excellent use of old school minimal sounds and melodies. At first I didn’t care very much for the high-pitched vocals, which are also used. But considering the name and theme of the album, it actually does fit very nice. After this we have still 19 songs left! So, this is too much to cover all in this review, but let me say that all the songs are of high quality and fits excellently within the concept. Since the massive amount of tracks, most of the songs are rather compact. This actually suits the song very well, they don’t go on forever. Some other nice tracks are ‘Massendefekt’ by Massendefect, with nice use of vocoder sounds and sweet melodies. Neon Mussolini also have a really great track with ‘Australia’, which uses drum ‘n bass elements.

This is indeed one really fantastic compilation again! It’s also a nice concept work. It is again available in 2 versions; the normal version and the limited version, which has 100 copies and comes hand-numbered in a baby spit cloth and lollipop. With the first ‘Minimal Baby’ compilation you got with the limited edition a diaper and plastic spoon, so if SkullLine continues this way, you have half your baby gear ready. This compilation is again printed on a real cd, so that’s actually a good step into the future. Also given the accessibility of this music, it can reach a wider audience. Again, all the music is great and a real orgasm to listen to. I named a few bands, but every track is great, so the musicians I didn’t name don’t have to feel bad, it’s all excellent! Even the artwork looks cool; it actually is just an inversion of the black and white colors of the first ‘Minimal Baby’ cd. Instead of white letters and black background, it’s now inverted. The same picture of the electricity socket is used, but know it seems to resemble the face of a baby more, which I think is a very nice touch! I’ve reviewed a decent amount of SkullLine releases in the last period, but this is really one of the best releases that have come out by them. An excellent compilation which should be on top of any electronic music fan!
