Converting Infinity

<< Back

It was about time for Xentrifuge to come up with a new album, it’s been some years since their debut ‘Light Extinguished’. When it came out it was the promise of a new kind of terror ebm project, combining hard aggrotech with powernoise. The album was partly successful with some nice stomping tracks, groundbreaking it never really was. Just a good harsh ebm album. Subtlety is also something Xentrifuge have never heard of, and they also don’t seem to know about the invention of volume knob. Everything is as angry, hard and loud as can be. The music also comes with the, what seems like patented by NoiTekk, screaming vocals, which sounds like black metal from a hell behind Hell. While a third album is most important for a band to see which route they are willing to take in the future, the second album often lets us know if the music has evolved enough to keep them in. Will this new album be anything we hoped for?

The album kicks of hard en dark with ‘Dormant’, which immediately let us know we listen to Xentrifuge. ‘Into Descent’ continues this way with some nice panning synth sounds. Things turn more fast and furious with ‘Pathogen’, which will sure do well in clubs. It’s a nice angry stomping track. With ‘Strain’ we move at an even faster speed. Because of the more chaotic beat structure, it’s perhaps less club friendly, still a nice track though. Towards the end of the album we get a really good surprise with ‘Penance’, which is probably the most fast and furious track on this album. It uses some very good ominous synths and has a great drive! The title track ‘Converting Infinity’ is upon us and it’s one of the best of the album. The tempo is slowed down, but when the chorus comes, it becomes fast-paced again, powernoise elements are working in and some very successful screeching synth are heard. Very well done!

So, do Xentrifuge deliver an instant groundbreaking classic? No, not really. Is it a complete renewal of their sound? No, not really too. So what then? Well, as whole this album is better made and structured then ‘Light Extinguished’. It has some very good tracks like ‘Pathogen’, but especially in the later tracks, ‘Penance’ and ‘Converting Infinity’, their brilliance shows up. The sound is better and sounds slicker and the album as a whole also has a better built-up, with some of the best tracks for last. So, if you didn’t like Xentrifuge in the first place, don’t even think a second of buying this, but if you love their sound, this album should be on top of your list. Mostly for lovers of harsh ebm, endzeit electro, what have you, this album should be priority, because it’s fast and furious as all hell and the frenetic energy should let you bounce all over the place. A recommendation to people who like this kind of music.
