After the convincing debut "Red Album", Baroness is back with "Blue Record". The artwork is really impressive again and the band is still easily recognizable for its unique sound. But there are changes too: "Blue Record" is more raw than its predecessor and doesn't lean on progressive guitar leads that much. The result of these changes is that "Blue Record" really has to grow on you and its hidden beauty is pretty hard to discover. Personally, I feel that Baroness hasn't managed to reach the level of "Red Album" again, even though "Blue Record" is far from a bad album. With savage, sludgy rock songs like "A Horse Called Golgotha" and "The Gnashing", Baroness proves to be an amazing band, but they have been unable to keep up this high level over the entire album. I have mixed feelings about "Blue Record", but it's still worthwhile checking out for lovers of raw, unpolished rock and Mastodontic metal.
