High Watt Electrocutions is not a band I’m very familiar with. Although it sounds like a rock band, it’s actually a one-man project by the Canadian Ryan Settee. It’s not your average rock sound mind you, as it is a combination of sleazy rock ‘n roll sounds, industrial rock, some dark jazz elements and an overall rather psychedelic sound.
This is the music you would hear in sleazy nightclubs that inhabit the worlds of David Lynch. I’m not surprised if Lynch would love this album, since it somewhat reminds me of Bluebob, the experimental jazz-blues-rock band Lynch has with John Neff. The albums opener, ‘Mountains of the Pharaohs’, sets the things up nicely with its raw and sleazy rock sound. But there’s more; ‘Light At the Speed of Sound’ does remind me somewhat of the good old prog-rock band The Alan Parsons Project, with it’s use of vocals and arrangements. ‘Obliteration’ has a very nice groove to it. It’s also one of the ‘faster’ songs. It also has some interesting melodic elements to it. ‘The Ruins of the Pyramids’ actually has more of a western feel to it, which is quite nice. The album ends with ‘Stripped Ruins’, which uses organ sounds over harmonica melodies. The organ sounds remind me somewhat of Philip Glass’ soundtrack for the film Koyaanisqatsi.
This is a very nice album if you like dark, psychedelic jazz-rock with some sleazy atmospheres. Every songs seems to flow into one another, so it’s like you are listening to one piece. There’s also a vinyl version on translucent 140 gram gold, which is limited to 400 copies!
