Stellet Licht (Silent Light) is Carlos Reygadas’third film. In this film, he shows how a man named Johan struggles with the choice he has between two women. This choice is ciomplicated by the fact that Johan is married and is a member of a religious Mennonite congregation. His marriage is supposed to be sacred, but he does not love his wife Esther anymore. She knows of him and his girlfriend Marianne, and suffers silently.
The film is shown in a slow, meditative manner with long takes. Sometimes the sound continues out of frame while Reygadas keeps staring at one place. The sound is very present in the film and managed to get me out of the hypnotic state the images had put me in.
The length of the film, in combination with the slow movind camera and storyline will not be enjoyable for everyone. But those that let themselves be hypnotised by it won’t see a movie, they will experience one.
